The authoress J.K. Rowling, she of Harry Potter fame, has donated a million quid to the Labour Party, with one of the reasons cited as being that it's because of the Labour Party's stance on child poverty.
So, if the money is because of the kids, wouldn't it have been better to have given directly to a children's charity directly? Or perhaps set up her own charity/foundation/movement, etc. (as The Right Student clearly points out)?
I'm sure that the Labour Party are in Fantasyland right now, thinking that this will help them, particulary as they are something like £18,000,000 in debt. I suspect, however, that the many good children's charities do not accept Galleons, Sickles and Knuts. Labour, as have been proved, will take anything.
For reference, £1,000,000 is worth 414807 galleons, 5 sickles and 4 knuts (going on the rate of a million quid equating roughly to two million US Dollars), according to this currency converter.
Maybe, just maybe, she's hankering for a gong? Just think, Dame J.K. Rowling? Kinda has a certain sound to it, no? Just ask Gordon, J.K., he'll sort it out now you've bunged him a nice million.

ach yeah. She should have given it to Save the children fund.
That million will just be spent on uptaining buildings or paying off debt or whatever.
